Proselytism is an often unethical form of evangelism that uses objectionable methods to convert people of one faith or no faith to another. The influx of new arrivals has increased the number of community partners from various faith backgrounds who have volunteered their time and resources. It is essential that both partners and resettlement staff be aware of the harm proselytism can have on new arrivals, such as re-traumatization, worries of losing benefits and support, and other situations that will be discussed in this webinar.
This public webinar is intended for service providers who want to reduce the risk of newcomer clients being harmed by proselytism or potentially coercive faith-sharing practices. It will be most useful for providers who already have a basic understanding of trauma-informed care and cultural awareness who are interested in a deeper dive on the topic of faith in resettlement services. This training may also be relevant for community partners and sponsors who are providing initial resettlement assistance to newcomers and who have questions about faith sharing.
